Why Should a Fleet Start With Oil Analysis?
Oil analysis shows what's happening inside each engine at every oil change: coolant getting in, fuel diluting the oil, dirt getting past the air filter, wear metals climbing, oil wearing out early. You find the problem in a sample report instead of on a rebuild invoice, while the truck is still earning.
You don't have to change anything to start. Keep your current oil change interval. Pull a sample every time you change oil. I go through every report with you. Nothing changes until your own data says it should.
Coolant in the Oil
Glycol and sodium show up before an EGR cooler or head gasket failure gets expensive.
Fuel Dilution
Idle time, injector problems and biodiesel thin the oil long before the odometer says so.
Dirt Ingestion
Silicon points to an air intake leak that is grinding the engine from the inside.
Wear Metals
Iron, copper, chromium and aluminum trends show which parts are wearing, and how fast.
Oil Breaking Down
TBN, oxidation and viscosity tell you how much life is actually left in the oil.
How Does the Program Work?
It runs in four steps. Sample at your current interval. After three samples, each truck has a trend. Where the reports support it, tighten filtration. Then set each truck's oil change interval from its own results, not a sticker on the windshield.
Sample at Every Change
Same interval you run today. Nothing else changes yet.
Build a Trend
Three reports per truck show what's normal for that engine and duty cycle.
Improve Filtration Where It Pays
Clean oil lasts longer. Many fleets add bypass filtration; I'll tell you whether your reports justify it.
Set Intervals on Data
Each truck gets the interval its reports support, and not a mile more.
Engine makers already work this way. International's own A26 spec card allows up to 70,000 miles "with oil sampling and International Truck approval." Oil analysis is the accepted path to longer intervals, not a shortcut around them.
What Happens When a Truck Misses Its Oil Change?
On a good synthetic, usually nothing, because the margin covers it. One of my customers, a construction company running F-150s, had the owner's own truck go 60,000 km on a single oil change because he was too busy to bring it in. The engine came through fine. They credit the oil.
A construction company I supply moved their F-150 fleet to AMSOIL and stretched their oil changes to 20,000 km. That was as far as they were comfortable going, and that's their call. Then the owner's own truck slipped through the schedule. He was always on the road, too busy running the company to bring it in, and it ran 60,000 km on a single oil change.
I don't recommend that. Nobody should run 60,000 km blind. But it shows the margin you're buying. When a truck gets missed, and in a busy fleet one always does, the oil still has your back.
I ran one fill of AMSOIL synthetic for nearly 100,000 km, changing the filter every 20,000 km and sampling along the way. The lab report said: change the filter, resample in 7,500 miles.
I changed the oil anyway, because that was far enough for me. But the oil wasn't done, and the report proved it.
Can One Oil Cover a Mixed Fleet?
Yes. AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 5W-30 (DHD) is formulated to meet Cummins CES 20086, Detroit DFS 93K222, Mack EOS-4.5, Volvo VDS-4.5 and API CK-4. One oil for Cummins, Detroit, Mack, Volvo, PACCAR and International trucks means one drum in the shop and no wrong oil in the wrong truck.
This is what I run in my own equipment: a 2005 Cummins 5.9, a 7.3 Power Stroke and a Kubota skid steer. Three engine makers, three generations, one oil. DHD is the grade AMSOIL put through Detroit's DD13 scuffing test, and it delivered 6X more wear protection than the spec requires. It passes cold cranking at −30°C (−22°F), where a conventional 15W-40 is rated to −20°C (−4°F).
Why Buy From a Mechanic Instead of a Salesman?
Because the person reading your oil analysis reports should know what a failing injector or a leaking oil cooler looks like in the bay, not just on paper.
Buy from the mechanic. Not the salesman.
