CAT C13 Engine Oil
CK-4 Spec, Viscosity & Drain Intervals for the CAT C13 — CAT's mid-range ACERT truck engine, built 2005–2010, running EGR and DPF from the factory.
Last reviewed: July 2026 · Based on CAT service documentation and AMSOIL technical data
The CAT C13 requires API CJ-4 or CK-4 low-SAPS oil. It is equipped with EGR and DPF from the factory — high-SAPS oil is not an option here. Primary grade: 15W-40 CK-4. FA-4 is not approved for this engine. CAT had no proprietary oil spec beyond API compliance.
The CAT C13 was CAT's mid-range truck engine in the ACERT lineup, produced 2005–2010. Full ACERT means EGR and DPF are standard equipment — this is not a legacy pre-emissions engine like the 3406E, and it does not tolerate the same oil chemistry. Low-SAPS oil is required, not optional, and it directly protects DPF service life.
What Does the CAT C13 Engine Oil Require?
- Required spec: API CJ-4 or CK-4 low-SAPS. No exceptions for DPF-equipped engines.
- Primary viscosity: 15W-40 CK-4.
- FA-4 not approved — this engine's HTHS viscosity requirements call for CK-4, not the thinner FA-4 formulation.
- No proprietary CAT spec — API CK-4 compliance is the requirement, same as the rest of the ACERT lineup.
- Drain intervals: 15,000–20,000 miles with CK-4 full synthetic and oil analysis confirmation.
Running correct low-SAPS oil directly impacts DPF service intervals. High-SAPS oil accelerates ash accumulation in the filter, shortening regeneration cycles and cutting filter life short. On high-mileage C13 engines, regular EGR cooler inspection is worth building into your PM schedule alongside oil analysis — cooler fouling and oil chemistry problems tend to show up together.
AMSOIL Recommendations for the C13
- 6X wear protection vs. the Detroit DD13 scuffing spec
- Low-SAPS CK-4 chemistry — built for DPF-equipped engines like the C13
- Up to 76% less oil consumption than the API CK-4 limit
- Top pick for extending drains on the C13 with oil analysis
- 4X wear protection vs. the Detroit DD13 scuffing spec
- Low-SAPS full synthetic at a lower cost than Signature Series
- Up to 66% less oil consumption than the API CK-4 limit
- Strong daily-driver upgrade for a C13 on standard OEM intervals
- 2X wear protection vs. the Detroit DD13 scuffing spec
- Low-SAPS, synthetic-blend — greater than 50% synthetic content
- Budget-friendly step up from a conventional 15W-40
- Good fit for a C13 on standard OEM drain intervals without analysis
⚠ AME is not listed here on purpose. AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Diesel & Marine (AME) is formulated for pre-DPF/pre-SCR engines only. Its high-SAPS chemistry will foul the C13's particulate filter — do not use it in this engine.
Frequently Asked Questions
What oil does a CAT C13 take?
API CJ-4 or CK-4 low-SAPS. 15W-40 is the primary grade. FA-4 is not approved. DME (CK-4 full synthetic) is the recommended choice, with ADP and SBDF as full-synthetic and blend alternatives.
Does the CAT C13 have a DPF?
Yes. The C13 is full ACERT with EGR and DPF standard. Low-SAPS oil is required to protect the filter — high-SAPS oil accelerates ash accumulation and forces premature regeneration cycles.
Is the CAT C13 a good engine?
A solid mid-range engine. Less storied than the 3406E or C15, but competent in the 370–520 hp range. Requires diligent EGR and DPF maintenance like the rest of the ACERT lineup — with proper care it's a reliable workhorse.
Can I extend drain intervals on a CAT C13?
Yes, with oil analysis. Standard intervals with CK-4 full synthetic run 15,000–20,000 miles. Extending beyond that without analysis confirming the oil's condition risks accelerated DPF ash loading and undetected wear.
