The Mercedes-Benz MBE 4000 and OM471 are both 12.8-liter inline-six heavy-duty diesel engines, but they are different applications with different oil requirements. The MBE 4000 is a legacy North American engine. The OM471 is a Mercedes-Benz global truck engine whose oil specification depends on the engine generation and vehicle application.

There is no safe one-line answer such as “all OM471 engines require MB 228.51.” The correct oil depends on the OM471 generation, vehicle and Mercedes-Benz Truck specification assigned to that application.
Low-SAPS heavy-duty specification with an HTHS viscosity of at least 3.5 cP. Typical viscosities include 5W-30, 10W-30 and 10W-40.

Match both the required performance specification and SAE viscosity. A matching viscosity alone does not make an oil suitable.
It depends on the emissions generation. The verified DTNA EPA04 MBE 4000 manual specifies API CI-4 multigrade oil. The EPA07 manual requires API CJ-4. SAE 15W-40 is the normal viscosity shown in the manuals. Modern API CK-4 exceeds the performance criteria of both CJ-4 and CI-4.

No. MB 228.51, now DTFR 15C110, applies to many Daimler heavy-duty applications, but newer OM471 variants can require specifications such as DTFR 15C130 or DTFR 15C140. Always verify the exact specification for the engine.
AMSOIL's current G3467 data sheet does not list MB 228.51 for DME 15W-40. It lists MB 228.51 for Signature Series 5W-30 DHD. DME does list MB 228.31 along with API CK-4, CJ-4 and CI-4+ performance.
API states that CK-4 oils exceed the performance criteria of CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CI-4 and CH-4 and can lubricate engines calling for those API categories. The SAE viscosity still needs to match the engine manufacturer's recommendation and operating conditions.
