Cummins CES 20086: The X15 and ISX15 Oil Spec Explained

Cummins CES 20086 is the engine oil standard Cummins sets for its heavy-duty diesels, including the X15 and ISX15 in Class 8 tractor-trailers. It starts with API CK-4 and adds Cummins' own testing. Cummins calls oils that pass it "registered", and lists them on QuickServe Online.

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Based on Cummins X15 maintenance literature, Cummins QuickServe Online and AMSOIL data sheet G3467

Cummins CES 20086 is Cummins' engine oil spec built on API CK-4, required for the X15 and recommended for the ISX15. Every CES 20086 oil is CK-4, but not every CK-4 oil meets CES 20086. It replaced CES 20081, the CJ-4-era spec, and oils that meet 20086 can be used where 20081 is called for. CES 20087 is the separate FA-4 spec. Red Seal tech pick: AMSOIL Max-Duty 15W-40 (DME), formulated to meet CES 20086 and CES 20081.

What Is Cummins CES 20086?

CES 20086 is a Cummins Engineering Standard for heavy-duty diesel engine oil. It takes API CK-4 as the baseline and adds Cummins-specific requirements for wear, deposits, oxidation and aftertreatment compatibility. That's why "API CK-4" on a jug doesn't prove an oil meets CES 20086: check the data sheet for the Cummins spec.

⚠ CK-4 is not the same claim as CES 20086. Every CES 20086 oil is CK-4, but not every CK-4 oil meets CES 20086. And don't swap in an FA-4 (CES 20087) oil unless your engine's documentation lists it; FA-4 has a lower high-temperature viscosity.

Where Is the Cummins CES 20086 Approved Oils List?

Cummins publishes it as the Oil Registration List on QuickServe Online: Service → Service Tools → Oil Registration Lists. Check it if your warranty or lease requires a registered oil. AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 15W-40 (DME) is formulated to meet Cummins CES 20086 and CES 20081.

The spec is the minimum. Max-Duty is the Red Seal tech pick for the X15 and ISX15: 6X more wear protection than Detroit's DD13 scuffing test requires, and up to 76% less oil consumption than API CK-4 allows. Running a fleet? Cummins Oil Change Intervals on CES 20086 Oil

On 2020 and newer X15s, Cummins sets the interval by fuel economy: 25,000 miles in severe service (3 to 4.9 mpg), 50,000 in short haul, 60,000 in normal service and 75,000 at 7+ mpg, with 12 months as the limit. Going past it takes oil analysis.

Cummins CES 20086 — Common Questions

From owner-operators, fleet managers and shop techs running Cummins-powered heavy-duty trucks and transport trucks across North America.

Cummins CES 20086 is a Cummins Engineering Standard for heavy-duty diesel engine oil. It uses API CK-4 as the baseline and adds Cummins-specific requirements. It is the spec for the Cummins X15 and the recommended spec for the ISX15.
No. Every CES 20086 oil is API CK-4, but not every CK-4 oil meets CES 20086. Check the oil's data sheet for the Cummins spec, not just the API donut.
Cummins publishes it as the Oil Registration List on QuickServe Online: Service, then Service Tools, then Oil Registration Lists. Cummins calls listed oils registered.
CES 20081 is the older Cummins spec from the API CJ-4 era. CES 20086 replaced it for CK-4 oils. Oils that meet CES 20086 can be used where CES 20081 is called for.
Only if your X15's documentation lists CES 20087, Cummins' FA-4 spec. Otherwise stay on CES 20086 (CK-4). AMSOIL does not make an FA-4 heavy-duty oil.
AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty (DME 15W-40, DEO 5W-40, DHD 5W-30, DTT 10W-30), Heavy-Duty Synthetic (ADP 15W-40) and Commercial-Grade (SBDF 15W-40) are all formulated to meet Cummins CES 20086 and CES 20081. The Red Seal tech pick for the X15 is DME 15W-40.
On 2020 and newer X15s, Cummins sets it by fuel economy: 25,000 miles in severe service, 50,000 in short haul, 60,000 in normal service and 75,000 at 7 mpg or better, with 12 months as the limit.
CES 20086 is a performance spec, not a viscosity grade. Oils meeting it come in 15W-40, 10W-30, 5W-40 and 5W-30. 15W-40 is the standard X15 grade; use 10W-30 only where your manual allows it.
