WHAT IS MACK EOS-4.5?
EOS stands for Engine Oil Specification. Mack EOS-4.5 is Mack Trucks’ proprietary oil standard for their MP-series diesel engines. It was introduced in 2016 alongside API CK-4 and replaces EOS-4 (the CJ-4 era spec).
Because Mack and Volvo are both part of Volvo Group and share powertrain engineering, EOS-4.5 runs parallel to Volvo VDS-4.5. Oils approved for VDS-4.5 are typically also approved for EOS-4.5 — verify against the specific approved product list.

MACK AND VOLVO: SAME COMPANY
Mack Trucks is a wholly owned subsidiary of Volvo Group. The MP7, MP8, and MP10 engines share engineering DNA with Volvo’s D11, D13, and D16 engines. This is why EOS-4.5 and VDS-4.5 are functionally equivalent — parallel specs for the same underlying technology in different brand packaging.
FA-4: NOT APPROVED FOR EOS-4.5
FA-4 is not approved for EOS-4.5 engines. The exception is the 2021+ fuel-efficient MP8 variant (identifiable by its dual oil filter configuration), which follows EOS-5 — Mack’s FA-4 equivalent, parallel to Volvo VDS-5. Unless you’re running that specific variant, use CK-4/EOS-4.5.
BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY
EOS-4.5 is backward compatible with EOS-4. If your Mack engine previously required EOS-4, an EOS-4.5 approved product can be used without issue. This simplifies fleet management when mixing older and newer Mack units.

What engines require Mack EOS-4.5?
Mack MP7, MP8, and MP10. The 2021 fuel-efficient MP8 variant can also use EOS-5 (FA-4 equivalent) — but only that specific configuration. All other MP engines require EOS-4.5 (CK-4).
Is Mack EOS-4.5 the same as Volvo VDS-4.5?
Functionally equivalent. Mack and Volvo share powertrain engineering under Volvo Group.
