One Oil for a Mixed Fleet — AMSOIL Max-Duty 5W-30 (DHD)

Detroit wants DFS 93K222. Cummins wants CES 20086. Mack wants EOS-4.5 and Volvo wants VDS-4.5. Stock four oils and sooner or later the wrong one goes in the wrong truck. AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 5W-30 (DHD) is formulated to meet all four, plus API CK-4, so one drum covers the yard.

For a Class 8 fleet running Detroit, Cummins, Mack and Volvo engines, AMSOIL Max-Duty 5W-30 (DHD) is the one oil that is formulated to meet every maker's spec: API CK-4, Detroit DFS 93K222, Cummins CES 20086, Mack EOS-4.5 and Volvo VDS-4.5. It cold-cranks at −30°C (−22°F). Each truck still runs its own engine maker's oil change interval. Run 15W-40 (DME) instead where trucks work at max weight in hot weather and you want the higher high-temperature film strength.

What It Covers

Which Engines Can Run AMSOIL DHD 5W-30?

AMSOIL lists DHD for engines requiring any of the specs below. That covers every major North American heavy-duty engine maker, plus pickups and off-road and European equipment that most mixed fleets also run.

Engine Maker Spec Required DHD Fits? Engine Guide
Detroit DD13, DD15, DD16 DFS 93K222 (CK-4) ✓ Yes DD15 →
Cummins X15, X12, ISX CES 20086 ✓ Yes X15 →
Mack MP7, MP8, MP10 EOS-4.5 ✓ Yes Mack →
Volvo D11, D13, D16 VDS-4.5 ✓ Yes Volvo →
PACCAR MX-11, MX-13 API CK-4 ✓ Check grade MX-13 →
International A26 · Caterpillar International spec card · Cat ECF-3 ✓ Check grade A26 →
Ram Cummins pickups Chrysler MS 10902 ✓ Yes —
European & off-road equipment ACEA E6/E7/E9 · MB 228.31/228.51 · MAN 3275/3477 · Deutz DQC III/IV-10LA · Scania LA-2 ✓ Yes —

"Check grade" means the spec is covered but confirm the viscosity. PACCAR calls for API CK-4 oil rather than a proprietary spec, and International publishes its own oil spec card. Both list the viscosity grades they want by temperature. PACCAR recommends 10W-30 for the MX-13. If your manual or spec card lists 5W-30 for your climate, DHD fits; if not, run Max-Duty 10W-30 (DTT) in those trucks.

Why One Oil

Why Run One Oil Across a Mixed Fleet?

Whether the yard is tractor-trailers, transport trucks, dump trucks or pickups, one oil means fewer mistakes, less inventory and a cleaner oil analysis trend. When every truck runs the same oil, a change in a report points to the engine, not to whichever oil the shop grabbed that day.

No Wrong Oil in the Wrong Truck

One drum on the wall. Nobody has to know which spec goes in which tractor.

One Drum, One Price

Buy in drums or totes at commercial pricing instead of jugs of four different oils.

Cleaner Oil Analysis

Same oil in every truck means every report compares like with like.

Cold Starts Covered

Cold cranking at −30°C, where a conventional 15W-40 is rated to −20°C.

Pickups & Equipment Too

Ram Cummins pickups, off-road and European equipment specs are on the same data sheet.

My Own Equipment

A 2005 Cummins 5.9, a 7.3 Power Stroke and a Kubota skid steer. Three engine makers, three generations, one oil: DHD. It is also the grade AMSOIL put through Detroit's DD13 scuffing test as the worst case, and it delivered 6X more wear protection than the spec requires.

DHD vs DME

5W-30 (DHD) or 15W-40 (DME) for Your Fleet?

Both meet the same core heavy-duty specs. DHD flows better cold and covers more equipment. DME carries more high-temperature film strength (HTHS 4.5 vs 3.5) for trucks working at max weight in the heat. Pick by duty and climate, not by habit.

Run DHD 5W-30 When

  • ✓ You run more than one engine maker
  • ✓ Trucks start cold: Canada, northern US
  • ✓ Pickups and equipment share the shop
  • ✓ You want one drum and one oil analysis baseline

Run DME 15W-40 When

  • ✓ Heavy-haul tractor-trailers at max weight, hot climate
  • ✓ Older, higher-mileage engines with more clearance
  • ✓ The manual's temperature chart doesn't list 5W-30
  • ✓ Lowest volatility (NOACK 5.1%) is the priority

Two oils is still better than four. Plenty of fleets settle on DHD for the yard and DME for the heavy-haul tractors. Whatever you run, keep each truck on one oil so its oil analysis trend stays clean. AMSOIL does not support extended drains where oils have been mixed.

Intervals

Does One Oil Mean One Oil Change Interval?

No. Each truck keeps its own engine maker's interval for its duty cycle. One oil simplifies the shelf, not the service schedule. AMSOIL's data sheet caps heavy-duty drains at 3X the OEM interval, not to exceed 60,000 mi, 600 hours or one year, unless oil analysis supports going further.

⚠ Where AMSOIL says not to extend drains with DHD. Performance-modified engines; biodiesel blends above B15; 2007–2009 Caterpillar C13 and C15 on-highway engines; and 2007–2010 Dodge, Ford and GM turbodiesel pickups. Run the OEM interval in those, and go past it only on oil analysis.

How Much to Buy

How Far Does a Drum of DHD Go?

A 55-gallon drum covers four to five Class 8 oil changes, depending on the engine. A 275-gallon tote covers 20 to 27. For a fleet, drums and totes on a commercial account cost less per service than jugs.

FAQ

Mixed Fleet Oil Questions

For a Class 8 fleet running Detroit, Cummins, Mack and Volvo engines, AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 5W-30 (DHD) is the Red Seal tech pick. It is formulated to meet API CK-4, Detroit DFS 93K222, Cummins CES 20086, Mack EOS-4.5 and Volvo VDS-4.5, so one oil covers every truck. Run 15W-40 (DME) instead in trucks working at max weight in hot weather.
Yes, if the oil meets the engine maker's spec and the operator's manual lists 5W-30 for your climate. DHD is a CK-4 5W-30 formulated to meet the Detroit, Cummins, Mack and Volvo specs. It is still a 30-weight at operating temperature, with an HTHS of 3.5, the CK-4 level for 30-grade oils.
Hot, yes: DHD is about 12.0 cSt at 100°C versus 15.6 for DME 15W-40, and its HTHS is 3.5 versus 4.5. Cold, DHD flows far better, cold-cranking at −30°C where 15W-40 is rated to −20°C. Both meet the same core heavy-duty specs.
Yes. AMSOIL's data sheet G3467 lists DHD for engines requiring Cummins CES 20086 and 20081, Detroit DFS 93K222, Mack EOS-4.5, Volvo VDS-4.5 and API CK-4, along with Cat ECF-3, ACEA E9 and others.
DHD is an API CK-4 oil, which is what PACCAR requires. PACCAR recommends 10W-30 for the MX-13, so check the temperature chart in your operator's manual before running 5W-30. For International engines, check the oil spec card for your engine. If 5W-30 isn't listed, run AMSOIL Max-Duty 10W-30 (DTT) in those trucks.
AMSOIL Max-Duty oils are compatible with other engine oils, so topping off won't hurt the engine. But mixing shortens oil life, and AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where oils have been mixed. Switch each truck at an oil change, not with a top-off.
No. Each truck keeps its own engine maker's interval for its duty cycle. AMSOIL's data sheet caps heavy-duty drains at 3X the OEM interval, not to exceed 60,000 miles, 600 hours or one year, unless oil analysis supports going further.
Only partly. DHD lists API SN Plus, so it covers older gasoline engines that call for a 5W-30 API SN or SN Plus oil. Newer gas pickups and vans call for API SP or a carmaker spec that DHD does not list, so run a separate gasoline oil in those and keep DHD for the diesels.
No. AMSOIL does not recommend aftermarket oil additives with its synthetic diesel oils. The additive package is already balanced to meet each engine maker's spec, and adding a bottle of something else can upset that balance.
Through an AMSOIL commercial account: DHD in drums and totes at commercial pricing, shipped direct to your shop or yard anywhere in the US and Canada, whether you run five transport trucks or fifty. The application takes a few minutes online, or call 888-490-0074.
A 55-gallon drum covers about five oil changes on a 40 to 44-quart engine like the DD13, MX-13 or Mack MP8, and four on a 45 to 55-quart engine like the DD15 or MP10. A 275-gallon tote covers 20 to 27 services.
