Frequently Asked Questions
Volvo D11 Engine Oil FAQ
What oil does a Volvo D11 take?
For D11 engines requiring Volvo VDS-4.5, use a VDS-4.5 / API CK-4 diesel engine oil in the viscosity appropriate for the truck and ambient temperature. Volvo identifies SAE 10W-30 as its recommended VDS-4.5 viscosity.
Can I use 15W-40 in a Volvo D11?
Yes, 15W-40 appears in Volvo's published viscosity guidance. The oil must carry the VDS specification required by the engine, and the viscosity must suit the operating temperature.
How much oil does a Volvo D11 hold?
It depends on configuration. Volvo documents 38-quart (36-litre) D11 installations and also identifies D11 applications with a 42-litre / 44-quart oil pan. Verify the specific truck before servicing it.
How often should Volvo D11 oil be changed?
The interval depends on model year, sump size, oil specification and duty cycle. Volvo's 2017–2020 schedule for D11/D13 engines with the 44-quart pan lists up to 55,000 miles for other approved VDS-4.5 oils under normal duty, dropping to 40,000 miles for heavy duty and 30,000 miles for severe duty.
Can a Volvo D11 use VDS-5 or FA-4 oil?
Do not answer this from engine name alone. Volvo's current documentation recommends VDS-5 / FA-4 for 2021-and-newer engines and lists VDS-4.5 / CK-4 as the minimum, while 2017–2020 engines specify VDS-4.5 / CK-4. Verify the model year and Volvo service information before changing oil specification.
Is 10W-30 or 15W-40 better for a Volvo D11?
Neither viscosity is universally “better.” Volvo identifies 10W-30 as the recommended VDS-4.5 grade, while approved 15W-40 can be appropriate at suitable ambient temperatures. The required VDS specification comes first.
