Volvo D13 Engine Oil | VDS-4.5 Spec, Viscosity & OEM Approvals

Volvo D13 oil requirements are determined by the engine's build year and required Volvo oil specification—not simply by whether the engine uses a conventional turbo or Turbo Compound. Most VDS-4.5 applications use 10W-30, while applicable newer engines specifying VDS-5 use 5W-30.

Last reviewed: July 2026 · Volvo service information and current AMSOIL technical data

Check the engine label, VIN-specific Volvo Driver Guide, or maintenance manual before ordering oil. For a D13 requiring Volvo VDS-4.5, Volvo recommends 10W-30, with approved 15W-40 products also available. Engines specifically calling for Volvo VDS-5 use 5W-30. Do not assume every D13 Turbo Compound requires VDS-5, and do not treat AMSOIL DHD as an FA-4 or VDS-5 oil.

The Oil Spec Is Not Determined by Turbo Type Alone

The previous version of this page incorrectly divided every standard D13 into VDS-4.5 and every 2017+ D13 Turbo Compound into VDS-5. Volvo documentation does not support that shortcut. The required specification must be confirmed from the truck's build information.

Do not order by “D13TC” alone. Turbo Compound was available before the introduction of VDS-5. A 2017 Turbo Compound engine is not automatically a VDS-5 engine. Confirm the required oil specification from the engine label, VIN-specific Volvo Driver Guide, or service literature.

Oil Capacity Varies by chassis, oil pan, filter arrangement, and model year; documented Volvo figures range from approximately 31 to 38 quarts
Drain Interval Use Volvo's model-year and duty-cycle maintenance chart; do not use one universal mileage figure
Viscosity

Volvo D13 Viscosity Grades

Specification comes first. Temperature and operating conditions determine which permitted viscosity is appropriate after the required Volvo specification has been confirmed.

10W-30
Volvo's Recommended VDS-4.5 Weight

The Volvo Driver Guide identifies 10W-30 as the recommended engine oil weight for VDS-4.5 applications. Use an oil carrying the required Volvo performance level.

15W-40
Available in VDS-4.5

Volvo sells VDS-4.5 15W-40, so the grade can be valid where permitted. It should not be presented as the universal primary grade for every D13.

5W-30
Volvo's Recommended VDS-5 Weight

Use 5W-30 when the engine's Volvo documentation specifies VDS-5. Do not substitute a product merely because it is 5W-30; the required OEM specification still matters.

Capacity

Volvo D13 Oil Capacity Is Configuration-Dependent

A single 40-quart figure is not accurate for every D13. Volvo documents different capacities across chassis generations and filter arrangements.

Volvo Documentation Example Published Capacity Use
Earlier D13 truck specifications 38 qt (36 L) Example published total lube-oil capacity
Current all-new VNL body-builder manual 33 qt (31 L) Standard listed D13 capacity
All-new VNL with two full-flow filters 31 qt Filter-configuration-specific figure

Service rule: Fill to the capacity listed for the exact chassis and engine configuration, start the engine, allow the oil to settle, and verify the final level on the dipstick. Do not force a generic internet capacity into every D13.

Drain Intervals

Use Volvo's Duty-Cycle Maintenance Chart

Volvo publishes maintenance intervals by model year and operating profile. Highway, regional, vocational, idle-heavy, fuel-consumption, and engine-hour conditions can produce different limits.

Before Setting the Interval
  • → Confirm model year and engine build
  • → Confirm VDS-4.5 or VDS-5
  • → Use Volvo's applicable maintenance chart
  • → Account for idle time and vocational service
  • → Follow time, mileage, engine-hour, and fuel limits
When Extending
  • → Do not replace Volvo's interval with a generic claim
  • → Establish a baseline with repeated oil samples
  • → Track TBN, oxidation, soot, viscosity, and wear metals
  • → Watch for coolant and fuel dilution
  • → Keep complete service and analysis records

Oil analysis supports the decision; it does not erase the OEM requirements. Use trend data from the same engine and duty cycle before extending beyond Volvo's published interval.

AMSOIL Products

AMSOIL Options for VDS-4.5 Volvo D13 Engines

The supplied AMSOIL bulletins position Signature Series and Heavy-Duty Synthetic oils as CK-4 products. DHD is a 5W-30 CK-4 all-fleet oil—not an FA-4 or VDS-5 product.

DHD correction: AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 DHD is presented in the supplied sales material as a CK-4 all-fleet oil. It is not identified there as FA-4 or Volvo VDS-5. Do not list DHD as the required oil for a VDS-5 D13.

AME remains excluded. AMSOIL AME 15W-40 is not for engines equipped with DPF or SCR exhaust aftertreatment and is not appropriate for current on-highway D13 applications.

Oil Analysis

Oil Analysis for Volvo D13 Engines

Oil analysis is useful for confirming oil condition, finding contamination, and developing a defensible drain interval for a specific truck and duty cycle.

  • → TBN and oxidation
  • → Soot and viscosity change
  • → Iron, copper, chromium, and aluminum
  • → Fuel dilution
  • → Sodium, potassium, and coolant indicators

Use multiple samples to establish a trend. One clean sample does not prove that every future interval is safe. Sample consistently from the same location and at comparable service points.

FAQ

Volvo D13 Engine Oil — Common Questions

Straight answers based on the corrected Volvo and AMSOIL information.

What oil does a Volvo D13 take?

The correct oil depends on the Volvo specification assigned to the engine. Volvo recommends 10W-30 for VDS-4.5 applications and 5W-30 for VDS-5 applications. Confirm the requirement with the engine label, chassis number, Volvo Driver Guide, or maintenance manual.

Does every Volvo D13 Turbo Compound require FA-4 or VDS-5?

No. Turbo Compound was used before VDS-5 was introduced. Turbo architecture alone does not identify the required oil specification. Use the engine's build-specific Volvo documentation.

Is AMSOIL DHD an FA-4 oil?

No. The supplied AMSOIL technical and sales material presents Signature Series 5W-30 DHD as a CK-4 all-fleet oil. It should not be described as FA-4 or Volvo VDS-5.

Can I use 15W-40 in a Volvo D13?

Volvo offers VDS-4.5 oil in 15W-40, so it can be correct where the engine documentation and temperature range permit it. Volvo's recommended VDS-4.5 weight is 10W-30, so 15W-40 should not be presented as the universal D13 grade.

How much oil does a Volvo D13 hold?

Capacity varies by model year, chassis, oil pan, and filter arrangement. Volvo documents examples from approximately 31 to 38 quarts. Verify the exact capacity for the truck instead of relying on one universal number.

What is the difference between VDS-4.5 and VDS-5?

VDS-4.5 is the common Volvo heavy-duty diesel specification associated with CK-4 oils and a recommended 10W-30 grade. VDS-5 is a newer, build-specific Volvo specification using 5W-30. VDS-5 should not be assumed to apply to every D13 produced after 2017.

What AMSOIL oil should I use in a Volvo D13?

For VDS-4.5 applications, select an AMSOIL viscosity permitted by Volvo and confirm the current product bulletin. DTT 10W-30 best matches Volvo's recommended VDS-4.5 viscosity; DME 15W-40 and other CK-4 grades may be options where permitted. The supplied AMSOIL bulletins do not identify a VDS-5 product.
