VISCOSITY GRADE SELECTION
Three grades cover the D13 across all seasons and variants. Match grade to engine type first, temperature second.
STANDARD D13 — ALL TEMPS ABOVE −4°F
Primary grade for every standard D13. Runs hot in summer, handles cold starts above −4°F. Strongest shear stability in class. Use this unless you have a D13TC or are running below −4°F.
D13TC 2017+ — YEAR-ROUND
Mandatory spec for the D13 Turbo Compound. Lower HTHS matches the tighter tolerances of the power turbine design. Delivers fuel savings up to 1.5% vs conventional CK-4 when correctly applied. Not backward-compatible with standard D13.
STANDARD D13 — COLD WEATHER ALT.
Cold-climate alternative for standard D13 when operating above −4°F. Easier cold cranking in winter. Still requires CK-4 / VDS-4.5 approval. Do not drop below 10W-30 with CK-4 in the standard D13 without checking Volvo’s cold-start chart.

Volvo VDS-4.5 (Volvo Drain Specification 4.5) is Volvo’s heavy-duty diesel engine oil standard. It exceeds the API CK-4 baseline and adds Volvo-specific performance requirements for oxidation stability, liner wear protection, and soot handling in D13 and other Volvo engines. Only in the D13 Turbo Compound (D13TC) — 2017 and newer. The D13TC is specifically designed for lower-HTHS FA-4 oil and requires VDS-5 / FA-4 spec. FA-4 is NOT approved for standard D13 engines (pre-2017 or non-TC variants). Running FA-4 in a standard D13 is outside Volvo’s approval and may reduce film protection at operating temperature. Stick with CK-4 / VDS-4.5 in any non-TC D13.
The Volvo D13 holds 40 quarts (10 gallons) with a filter change. Oil-only changes without filter replacement may be slightly less. Always verify against your specific truck’s maintenance manual, as aftertreatment configurations and auxiliary equipment can affect sump volume in some configurations.
VDS-4.5 is Volvo’s standard heavy-duty spec built on API CK-4. It covers all D13 engines and prioritizes wear protection and engine cleanliness with conventional HTHS viscosity (min 3.5 mPa·s). VDS-5 is Volvo’s fuel-efficient spec for the D13TC, built on API FA-4. It uses lower HTHS viscosity (min 2.9 mPa·s) to reduce internal friction and improve fuel economy.
