DFS 93K222

Detroit Diesel’s GHG17 Engine Oil Specification

DFS 93K222 is Detroit Diesel’s proprietary oil specification for GHG17 DD-series engines (DD13, DD15, DD16). It requires oil that meets API CK-4 or FA-4 performance and passes Detroit’s specific soot handling, oxidation stability, and aftertreatment compatibility requirements. AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 5W-30 and 15W-40 both carry DFS 93K222 approval.

What Is DFS 93K222 and Why Does It Exist?

API oil categories — CK-4 and FA-4 — cover a broad range of heavy-duty diesel engines from multiple manufacturers. They set minimum performance thresholds. Detroit Diesel’s GHG17 platform has requirements that go beyond those minimums.

DFS 93K222 was introduced with the GHG17 platform in 2017 to address the increased thermal and soot load of post-2017 emissions systems. The GHG17 engines run hotter EGR systems, more sophisticated DPF/SCR aftertreatment, and Detroit’s proprietary IntelliServ oil monitoring — all of which place specific demands on the oil.

  • Introduced with the GHG17 platform (2017+) — DD13, DD15, DD16
  • Supersedes DFS 93K218 (EPA10 era) — not backward compatible in reverse
  • Requires API CK-4 OR FA-4 as a base — both qualify
  • Adds soot handling and oxidation stability requirements beyond API minimums
  • Requires Low-SAPS formulation for DPF and SCR aftertreatment compatibility
  • Validated against Detroit’s EGR design and IntelliServ monitoring system

“Meets CK-4” does not equal “meets DFS 93K222.” CK-4 is a prerequisite, not a guarantee. Detroit maintains an approved product list. Verify your oil is on it before using it in a GHG17 DD-series engine.

Why Detroit Has a Proprietary Spec Beyond API

API categories are industry-wide standards. They’re designed to cover the broadest possible range of heavy-duty diesel engines from every manufacturer. That broad scope means the tests represent a compromise — they can’t fully capture the specific requirements of any single OEM’s engine architecture.

Detroit’s GHG17 platform has three specific characteristics that drive the need for DFS 93K222:

01

EGR Design

Detroit’s EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system on GHG17 is tuned for emissions compliance in a way that increases soot loading on the oil faster than older designs. DFS 93K222 sets specific soot dispersancy thresholds API alone doesn’t require.

02

Aftertreatment Chemistry

DPF and SCR systems are sensitive to ash deposits from oil additives (SAPS). Detroit’s DFS 93K222 limits SAPS levels specifically for their aftertreatment configuration — not just the general API target.

03

IntelliServ Integration

IntelliServ predicts oil life based on engine operating data. To enable extended drain intervals, the oil must have validated oxidation stability that IntelliServ’s algorithm can rely on. DFS 93K222 approval is what unlocks that extended interval.

DFS 93K222 — Common Questions

  • All GHG17 Detroit Diesel engines: DD13, DD15, and DD16. These are 2017 and newer engines on the GHG17 emissions platform. Pre-2017 EPA10 engines (DD13, DD15) use the older DFS 93K218 specification and require CK-4 only.
  • No. CK-4 is a prerequisite but not sufficient on its own. An oil must be tested and specifically approved against Detroit’s DFS 93K222 requirements. The spec adds soot handling, oxidation stability, and Low-SAPS requirements beyond what API CK-4 mandates. Detroit maintains an approved product list — verify your oil is on it.
  • DFS 93K222. The 93K218 spec covered EPA10-era DD13 and DD15 engines (2010–2016). When Detroit introduced the GHG17 platform in 2017, they released DFS 93K222, which added FA-4 compatibility and tightened soot handling requirements. DFS 93K222 approved oil can be used in EPA10 engines (it’s a superset), but DFS 93K218 approved oil cannot be used in GHG17 engines without DFS 93K222 approval.
