Volvo Engine Oil — D11, D13 & D16 Spec, Capacity & What to Buy
Volvo builds three heavy-duty diesels for the VNL, VNR, VNX, VHD and VAH: the 10.8-litre D11, the 12.8-litre D13 and the 16.1-litre D16. All three use Volvo's own oil spec on top of API: VDS-4.5 (CK-4 based) and, on 2021 and newer engines, VDS-5 (FA-4 based). The spec follows the engine's model year, not the truck badge. Every Volvo D11, D13 and D16 can run oil meeting Volvo VDS-4.5 (API CK-4). On 2021 and newer engines, Volvo recommends VDS-5 (API FA-4) and keeps VDS-4.5 as the minimum; VDS-5 oil does not go in 2020-and-older engines. Volvo recommends 10W-30 for VDS-4.5 engines, with 15W-40 also approved. A D13 oil change takes 35–40 quarts depending on the pan and filters; the D11 takes 44 quarts and the D16 55 quarts. Volvo's three heavy-duty engines share one oil spec family but not one capacity. The D13 is the volume engine in VNL and VNR tractors and its fill changes with the oil pan and filter setup; the D11 works vocational and regional trucks; the D16 handles heavy haul.

Volvo Oil Spec by Model Year — VDS-4.5 vs VDS-5
Volvo sets the oil spec by engine model year. 2017–2020 engines use VDS-4.5, a CK-4-based spec. On 2021 and newer engines, Volvo recommends VDS-5, an FA-4-based spec, and still accepts VDS-4.5 as the minimum. VDS-5 oil is for 2021 and newer engines only.

Simple rule: VDS-4.5 works in every 2010-and-newer D11, D13 and D16. VDS-5 only goes in 2021 and newer. Check the engine model year on the data plate, not the truck's model year. AMSOIL's heavy-duty diesel oils are CK-4 oils that meet Volvo VDS-4.5; AMSOIL does not currently offer a VDS-5 oil. Volvo lists approved oils in bulletin PV776-89091965.
⚠ Two oils to watch for. VDS-5 oil is not backward compatible: in a 2020-or-older Volvo, its lower viscosity can drop oil pressure and trigger warnings. And keep AMSOIL AME (Heavy-Duty Diesel & Marine) out of 2010-and-newer Volvos: it is a CI-4+ oil for engines without exhaust aftertreatment, and every on-highway Volvo since then runs a DPF and SCR.
10W-30 or 15W-40 in a Volvo?
Volvo recommends 10W-30 for VDS-4.5 engines, and approved 15W-40 oils are also allowed. Pick by the temperature chart in your operator's manual and the work: 10W-30 for most highway tractors, 15W-40 for heavy haul in the heat, 5W-40 for hard cold starts.

Volvo D13 Oil Capacity by Pan and Filters
A D13 oil change takes 34.9 to 40.2 quarts depending on the oil pan material and whether the engine has two or three oil filters, per Volvo's 2022 body builder manual. Check which pan your truck has before you order.

⚠ Fill to the documented quantity, then check the dipstick. Run the engine, let the oil drain back and confirm the level per Volvo's procedure. Overfilling causes foaming and aeration; underfilling cuts oil pressure margin under load.
Best AMSOIL Oil for Volvo Engines
For the D11 and D13, the Red Seal tech pick is AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 10W-30 (DTT), Volvo's recommended grade, formulated to meet VDS-4.5. For the D16 and heavy haul, run Max-Duty 15W-40 (DME). Max-Duty 5W-40 (DEO) is the cold-climate pick.

All three tiers are API CK-4 oils that meet the requirements of Volvo VDS-4.5. Run Volvo's interval for your duty cycle, and use oil analysis before going past it.
Volvo Oil Change Intervals
Volvo sets the oil change interval by engine, duty cycle and fuel economy in the operator's manual for your truck. Run that interval for your duty. AMSOIL's own data sheet caps heavy-duty drains at 3X the OEM interval, not to exceed 60,000 mi, 600 hours or one year, unless oil analysis supports going further.
⚠ Going past Volvo's interval? Do it on oil analysis. High idle, heavy loads, short trips and biodiesel blends all shorten oil life. A lab report on your own truck is what earns the extra miles.
