CAT C15 ENGINE OIL
ACERT VS NON-ACERT — DIFFERENT ENGINES, DIFFERENT OIL REQUIREMENTS
DIRECT ANSWER:
The CAT C15 comes in two versions: non-ACERT (pre-2003, no EGR) and ACERT (2003–2010, with EGR and DPF). Non-ACERT C15: API CI-4+ or better, 15W-40. ACERT C15: API CJ-4 or CK-4, low-SAPS required. FA-4 not approved for either. CAT had no proprietary oil spec.

KNOW YOUR VERSION FIRST
The C15 spans two fundamentally different engines. Using the wrong oil in a DPF-equipped ACERT will plug the filter.
NON-ACERT C15 (1999–2002)
- No EGR, no DPF. Same class as the 3406E from an oil standpoint.
- API CI-4+ or better — no SAPS restriction applies.
- CK-4 (DME) is backward compatible and the preferred modern choice.
- AME (CI-4+) also acceptable for this version.
ACERT C15 (2003–2010)
- Added EGR and DPF on later production models.
- CJ-4 minimum, CK-4 preferred. Low-SAPS required for DPF-equipped versions.
- Do not use high-SAPS CI-4+ oil — sulfated ash deposits will accumulate in the DPF.
- Known reliability issues: cylinder head cracking, EGR cooler failures. Quality oil matters more, not less.
HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR VERSION
2003+ is likely ACERT. Reliable method: check the emissions label on the engine block. If a DPF canister is present in the exhaust, it’s ACERT and requires low-SAPS oil.
AMSOIL RECOMMENDATIONS
Signature Series Max-Duty 15W-40 (DME)
CK-4 | Full Synthetic | Both Versions
100% synthetic CK-4. Low-SAPS meets ACERT DPF requirements. Backward compatible with non-ACERT C15. Correct for both versions.
Heavy-Duty Diesel & Marine 15W-40 (AME)
CI-4+ | Non-ACERT Only
CI-4+ rated. Acceptable for non-ACERT C15 (pre-2003, no DPF) only.
ACERT C15 WARNING: ACERT C15 engines with DPF require low-SAPS oil (CJ-4 / CK-4). Do NOT use high-SAPS CI-4+ oil like AME in a DPF-equipped C15 — it will plug the filter.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What oil does a CAT C15 take?
Depends on version. Non-ACERT (pre-2003): CI-4+ or better, 15W-40, no SAPS restriction. ACERT with DPF: CJ-4 or CK-4, low-SAPS required. CK-4 (DME) covers both.
How do I know if my C15 is ACERT?
Model year is a starting point — 2003+ is likely ACERT. More reliably: check the emissions label on the engine. If it has a DPF canister in the exhaust, it’s ACERT and needs low-SAPS oil.
Was the CAT C15 ACERT reliable?
Reputation is mixed. The ACERT emissions system had cylinder head and EGR cooler issues on early production. Well-maintained ACERT engines are still running but require more attention than the 3406E or non-ACERT C15.
Why did CAT stop making truck engines?
CAT exited the on-highway truck engine market in 2010 after struggles with ACERT emissions compliance and a failed partnership with Navistar. They shifted focus to off-highway, mining, and marine applications.
