Caterpillar On-Highway Diesel Engines

CAT C15 Engine Oil

The correct oil depends on the engine serial prefix, emissions configuration and whether the truck has a diesel particulate filter. Not every C15 ACERT has the same oil requirement.

Direct Answer

Most CAT C15 truck engines use 15W-40 heavy-duty diesel oil. A modern API CK-4 15W-40 is the practical choice for most applications and covers earlier API diesel oil categories. However, a 2007-emissions C15 equipped with a DPF must use a low-ash oil suitable for that emissions system. Earlier non-DPF C15 engines may also use a suitable CI-4+ oil. Verify the engine serial number, emissions label and Caterpillar operation manual. FA-4 should not be substituted unless Caterpillar specifically approves it for the exact engine.

Displacement 15.2 Litres
Configuration Inline Six
Common Grade 15W-40
Oil Capacity Usually 40–44 qt
Current Category API CK-4

There Are Three Practical C15 Groups

Dividing every C15 into only ACERT and non-ACERT is too broad. For oil selection, the more useful split is the early single-turbo engines, the pre-DPF ACERT engines and the later DPF-equipped emissions engines.

Early C15

Single-Turbo, Non-DPF

These engines followed the CAT 3406E and include common engine serial prefixes such as 6NZ and other early C15 configurations.

  • No diesel particulate filter
  • No Caterpillar EGR system
  • Commonly operated on 15W-40
  • CI-4 or CI-4+ was commonly specified during the period
  • Modern CK-4 oil may be used where backward compatibility applies
Pre-DPF ACERT

Compound-Turbo ACERT

Earlier C15 ACERT engines used Caterpillar’s air-management and combustion strategy with compound turbochargers. They did not use a conventional cooled-EGR system.

  • Compound turbocharger arrangement
  • No DPF on the earlier versions
  • Generally associated with Caterpillar ECF oil requirements
  • 15W-40 remains the common viscosity
  • Verify the serial prefix before choosing a legacy oil
2007-Emissions C15

DPF-Equipped ACERT

Later on-highway C15 engines used an exhaust aftertreatment system with a diesel particulate filter and Caterpillar regeneration hardware.

  • Diesel particulate filter in the exhaust
  • Requires emissions-compatible low-ash oil
  • API CJ-4 was the period specification
  • API CK-4 is the current replacement category
  • Do not use CI-4+ AME in a DPF-equipped engine

How to Identify Your C15

Check the Engine Serial Prefix

The engine serial prefix is more reliable than the truck model year. Trucks are frequently repowered, glider kits may use older engines and the chassis year may not match the engine’s emissions family.

Read the Emissions Label

Locate the Caterpillar emissions label on the engine. It identifies the emissions family and provides a better starting point than guessing from the valve-cover colour or turbo arrangement.

Look for the DPF Canister

A large aftertreatment canister and regeneration system in the exhaust indicate that the engine requires an emissions-compatible low-ash diesel oil.

Verify the Oil Pan

C15 oil capacity varies with the oil-pan arrangement and installation. Do not automatically pour in 45 quarts. Fill using the Caterpillar manual and confirm the final level on the properly calibrated dipstick.

Mechanic’s Note

Do not identify the oil requirement from “ACERT” alone. An earlier ACERT without a DPF and a later DPF-equipped ACERT do not have identical aftertreatment concerns.

CAT C15 Oil Specification Table

Engine Type Aftertreatment Period Oil Category Practical Current Choice
Early single-turbo C15 No DPF API CH-4, CI-4 or CI-4+ depending on engine documentation 15W-40 CK-4 or an approved CI-4+ oil
Earlier C15 ACERT No DPF Caterpillar ECF requirement listed for the exact engine 15W-40 CK-4 after confirming product and engine requirements
2007-emissions C15 ACERT DPF and regeneration system API CJ-4 and applicable Caterpillar ECF requirement Low-ash API CK-4 15W-40
DPF Warning

Do not use AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Diesel & Marine 15W-40 AME in a DPF-equipped C15. AME is intended for applications specifying API CI-4+ and earlier categories. Use a suitable CK-4 oil in the later emissions-equipped engine.

AMSOIL Recommendations

Older Non-DPF Engines

Heavy-Duty Diesel & Marine 15W-40

Product Code AME · API CI-4+

AME is intended for engines calling for API CI-4+ and earlier specifications. It may be suitable for an older non-DPF C15 when confirmed against the Caterpillar requirements for that engine. It is not the choice for a DPF-equipped 2007-emissions C15.

CAT C15 Oil Capacity

Many on-highway CAT C15 installations hold approximately 40 to 44 quarts with the oil filter replaced, but the exact capacity depends on the oil pan, truck installation and dipstick calibration.

Fill the engine according to the correct Caterpillar operation manual. Start the engine, confirm oil pressure, shut it down, allow the oil to drain back and then verify the level on the dipstick. The dipstick and oil-pan arrangement matter more than a generic capacity listed online.

CAT C15 Oil-Change Intervals

Use the Caterpillar maintenance interval for the exact engine and duty cycle. Excessive idling, light-load operation, fuel dilution, soot loading, dust, cold operation and high engine hours can shorten the usable oil interval.

Extended drains should be supported by oil analysis rather than mileage alone. A longer-lasting synthetic oil does not remove the need to monitor contamination, fuel dilution, soot and engine condition.

Oil Analysis

Oil analysis can track soot, viscosity, fuel dilution, coolant contamination, wear metals and remaining oil condition. It does not replace inspections or repair an existing mechanical problem.

Common CAT C15 Oil Problems

Soot Thickening

Excessive soot can thicken the oil, restrict flow and increase abrasive wear. Poor combustion, excessive idling, injector problems and extended oil intervals can all contribute.

Fuel Dilution

Fuel in the crankcase lowers viscosity and weakens the oil film. Injector problems, excessive regeneration events or prolonged idling should not be treated as an oil-brand problem.

Coolant Contamination

Coolant can damage bearings and form sludge. A rising oil level, unexplained coolant loss or abnormal analysis results require diagnosis, not a thicker oil.

Turbocharger Heat

Dirty oil, restricted oil supply, shutdown immediately after hard pulls and excessive exhaust temperature can damage turbocharger bearings and create deposits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What oil does a CAT C15 take?

Most CAT C15 truck engines use 15W-40 heavy-duty diesel oil. A modern API CK-4 15W-40 is the practical recommendation for most applications, but the engine serial number, Caterpillar ECF requirement and emissions equipment must still be verified.

How much oil does a CAT C15 hold?

Many on-highway C15 installations hold approximately 40 to 44 quarts with the filter, but capacity varies with the oil pan and installation. Use the Caterpillar manual and calibrated dipstick for the exact engine.

Does the CAT C15 ACERT use EGR?

The on-highway C15 ACERT used Caterpillar’s ACERT combustion and air-management strategy rather than a conventional cooled-EGR system. Later versions added a DPF and regeneration system to meet emissions requirements.

Do all C15 ACERT engines have a DPF?

No. Earlier C15 ACERT engines were built without a diesel particulate filter. The later 2007-emissions versions used DPF aftertreatment.

Can I use CI-4+ oil in a CAT C15?

It may be suitable for an older non-DPF C15 when the engine documentation permits it. Do not use a high-ash CI-4+ oil in a DPF-equipped C15.

Can I use CK-4 oil in an older CAT C15?

CK-4 is generally backward compatible with earlier API diesel oil categories. Confirm the product specifications and the Caterpillar oil requirement for the exact engine.

Can I use FA-4 oil in a CAT C15?

FA-4 should not be used as a substitute for CK-4 in a C15 unless Caterpillar specifically approves it for that exact engine. FA-4 oils have a different high-temperature, high-shear viscosity range.

Was the CAT C15 ACERT a bad engine?

The ACERT has a more complicated air and emissions system than the early C15. Compound-turbo, actuator, wiring and later aftertreatment problems can be expensive, but condition, maintenance history and completed updates matter more than the ACERT name alone.

Choose the Oil by Engine—Not Guesswork

Check the engine serial prefix, Caterpillar oil requirement and emissions equipment before ordering. For most CAT C15 applications requiring a 15W-40 CK-4 oil, Signature Series Max-Duty is the strongest AMSOIL starting point.
