Detroit Diesel DD16 — 15.6L Inline-6

Detroit DD16 Engine Oil — Spec, Capacity & Change Interval

The Detroit DD16 is Detroit's largest on-highway engine: 15.6L, 500–600 hp and up to 2,050 lb-ft, built for heavy haul, tanker and high-GVW vocational work in the Freightliner Cascadia and Western Star 49X. It runs the same two Detroit oil specs as the DD15: DFS 93K222 (API CK-4) and DFS 93K223 (API FA-4). Get the spec right, buy the right quantity, and run Detroit's interval for your duty cycle.

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Based on Detroit Diesel (DTNA) service literature and AMSOIL data sheet G3467

A Detroit DD16 oil and filter change takes 45 quarts (43 L, about 11.25 US gallons), the same as the DD15. Not 52. Every DD16 can use oil meeting DFS 93K222 (API CK-4) or DFS 93K223 (API FA-4). Detroit's oil change interval runs from 35,000 mi in severe service to 55,000 mi in long haul. My pick for every DD16: AMSOIL Max-Duty 15W-40 (DME).

DD16 Oil Spec — CK-4 or FA-4

Every DD16 is an EPA10 or newer engine, so Detroit approves both of its oil specs in every DD16: DFS 93K222 (API CK-4) and DFS 93K223 (API FA-4). There is no EPA07 DD16, so the "CK-4 only" rule that applies to early DD13s and DD15s never applies here.

How to identify your DD16 generation: Check the emissions certification label on the engine or door jamb. It shows EPA10, GHG14 or GHG17. If in doubt, call Detroit Customer Support with your Engine Serial Number.

Heavy haul at max weight? FA-4 is approved, but a DD16 pulling heavy loads lives at high cylinder pressure and heat. That's where 15W-40 CK-4, with its higher HTHS film strength, earns its keep. It's why I run DME 15W-40 as the default for every DD16.

Oil Capacity

Detroit DD16 Oil Capacity

A DD16 takes 45 quarts (43 L) at an oil and filter change, per Detroit's own capacity tables, the same as the DD15. Total dry volume after a rebuild is 51.8 quarts (49 L), because about 6 litres stays in the engine at a normal drain. That dry figure is where the "52 quart" number in older guides comes from. Buy for 45 quarts at a normal service.

Fill Type Quarts Litres Gallons Notes
Oil & Filter Change 45 qt 43 L 11.25 gal Standard oil change
Total Dry Volume 51.8 qt 49 L 12.9 gal New engine or rebuild
DD15 Oil & Filter Change 45 qt 43 L 11.25 gal Same as the DD16

⚠ Always verify capacity with your engine's service label. Overfilling causes oil foaming, aeration, and seal damage. Underfilling reduces oil pressure margin under high load.

Buy the Right Oil for a DD16 Service

A DD16 oil and filter change takes 45 quarts, about 11.25 US gallons. Two AMSOIL Twin Packs plus two gallon jugs is 12 gallons: one full service with 3 quarts left for top-offs. For fleets, a 275-gallon tote covers 24 DD16 services.

Change Intervals

DD16 Oil Change Interval

Detroit sets the DD16 oil and filter interval by service category, on DFS 93K222 or 93K223 oil: 55,000 mi in long haul (6.0–6.9 mpg), 40,000 mi or 1,000 hours in short haul (5.1–5.9 mpg), and 35,000 mi or 750 hours in severe service (up to 5.0 mpg). Detroit does not list an efficient long-haul interval for the DD16, so it never gets the DD15's 75,000 mi.

⚠ Going past Detroit's interval? Do it on oil analysis. Detroit's own DD16 interval already reaches 55,000 mi in long haul. A good synthetic gives you more margin inside that interval. Going beyond it safely takes a lab report on your own truck, because heavy loads, high idle time, biodiesel blends, EGR cooler leaks and soot loading all shorten oil life.

FA-4 vs CK-4

FA-4 vs CK-4 on the DD16

Both are approved in every DD16. DFS 93K222 is Detroit's CK-4 spec (minimum HTHS 3.7 cP). DFS 93K223 is Detroit's FA-4 spec (minimum HTHS 2.9 cP), which Detroit recommends for fuel economy. The choice comes down to duty cycle: fuel economy on lighter highway work, film strength on heavy haul.

FA-4 — DFS 93K223

  • ✓ Approved in every DD16
  • ✓ Lower HTHS viscosity for fuel economy
  • ✓ Detroit's recommended spec for fuel economy
  • → Thinner film at max load and high heat

CK-4 — DFS 93K222

  • ✓ Approved in every DD16
  • ✓ Higher HTHS viscosity, more film strength
  • ✓ One spec across DD13, DD15 and DD16 fleets
  • → May give up a little fuel economy vs FA-4

Simple rule: both DFS 93K222 (CK-4) and DFS 93K223 (FA-4) are approved in every DD16. For heavy haul, run CK-4. Note: AMSOIL's heavy-duty diesel oils are CK-4 oils that meet DFS 93K222; AMSOIL does not currently offer a 93K223 FA-4 oil.

Detroit Spec

What Is DFS 93K222?

DFS 93K222 is Detroit Diesel's engine oil specification built on API CK-4, with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 3.7 cP. It adds Detroit's own testing on top of the API category, including a DD13 liner scuffing test, and covers every DD13, DD15 and DD16 from EPA07 onward.

01

Shear Stability

Oil must retain viscosity under heavy mechanical shear.

02

Soot Handling

Oil must keep soot suspended and prevent larger wear-causing particles.

03

Aeration Control

Oil must resist air entrainment that reduces film strength.

04

Liner Scuffing

Detroit's scuffing test directly measures cylinder liner protection.

All three tiers are CK-4 oils that meet the requirements of DFS 93K222. Run Detroit's interval for your duty cycle, and use oil analysis before going past it.

Oil Analysis

Why DD16 Fleets Should Run Oil Analysis

The DD16 runs EGR and usually works hard, which means soot loading and heat are real factors. Mileage alone does not tell you the full story.

A basic oil analysis sample checks the numbers that matter:

  • → TBN: remaining acid-neutralizing reserve
  • → Soot: soot loading and viscosity risk
  • → Wear metals: iron, copper, chromium, aluminum
  • → Coolant contamination: early warning for cooler or gasket problems

EGR Cooler — The Failure to Watch

EGR cooler leaks are a known issue on higher-mileage Detroit engines. When coolant reaches the intake stream or oil, damage gets expensive fast.

Oil analysis can show glycol or sodium before symptoms are obvious.

FAQ

Detroit DD16 Engine Oil — Common Questions

From owner-operators, fleet managers, and shop techs running the DD16 across North America.

Every DD16 can use oil meeting Detroit DFS 93K222 (API CK-4) or DFS 93K223 (API FA-4). There is no EPA07 DD16, so both specs are approved in every one. The oil I recommend for every DD16 is AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 15W-40 (DME).
A DD16 takes 45 quarts (43 L, about 11.25 US gallons) at an oil and filter change, per Detroit's capacity tables. That is the same as the DD15. Total dry volume after a rebuild is 51.8 quarts (49 L).
No. 52 quarts is close to the DD16's total dry volume (51.8 quarts) after a rebuild. A normal oil and filter change takes 45 quarts, because about 6 litres stays in the engine at a drain.
Detroit's DD16 oil and filter interval depends on service category: 55,000 miles in long haul (6.0 to 6.9 mpg), 40,000 miles or 1,000 hours in short haul (5.1 to 5.9 mpg), and 35,000 miles or 750 hours in severe service (up to 5.0 mpg). Detroit does not list an efficient long-haul interval for the DD16. Go beyond Detroit's interval only on oil analysis.
Both are approved. DFS 93K222 is Detroit's CK-4 spec and DFS 93K223 is its FA-4 spec, and Detroit recommends 93K223 for fuel economy. For heavy haul and high-GVW work, CK-4 15W-40 gives more high-temperature film strength.
Buy 12 US gallons: two AMSOIL Twin Packs (two 2.5-gallon jugs each) plus two gallon jugs. That covers one 45-quart DD16 oil and filter change with 3 quarts left for top-offs. A 275-gallon tote covers 24 DD16 services.
AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 15W-40 (DME) for every DD16. It is a CK-4 oil that meets the requirements of DFS 93K222. Max-Duty 5W-30 (DHD) is the fuel-economy and mixed-fleet option, and Max-Duty 5W-40 (DEO) is the cold-climate choice.
Yes. The DD13, DD15 and DD16 share Detroit's oil specs: DFS 93K222 (CK-4) and DFS 93K223 (FA-4). The DD16 and DD15 also take the same 45 quarts. The difference is the interval: the DD16 tops out at 55,000 miles in long haul, while the DD15 reaches 75,000 miles in efficient long haul.
