CAT 3406E Engine Oil | Spec, Viscosity & Recommendations

CAT 3406E ENGINE OIL
PRE-ACERT, PRE-EGR — OIL SPEC FOR THE MOST TRUSTED TRUCK ENGINE EVER BUILT
DIRECT ANSWER:
The CAT 3406E requires API CH-4 or better. CK-4 is backward compatible and acceptable. No EGR, no DPF — low-SAPS chemistry is not required. Primary grade: 15W-40. The 3406E was produced 1993–1999 and is still in service in millions of trucks. CAT had no proprietary oil spec beyond API.

ENGINE OVERVIEW

The CAT 3406E is widely considered the most reliable diesel truck engine ever built — still powering trucks 25+ years after production ended. Pre-EGR, pre-DPF. No aftertreatment. No low-SAPS requirement. The oil spec is straightforward because the engine is straightforward.

OIL SPECIFICATION

  • OEM minimum: API CH-4. This was the spec when the engine was built.
  • Modern recommendation: API CK-4 15W-40. Backward compatible — exceeds CH-4, CI-4+, CJ-4.
  • FA-4 not suitable — older engine tolerances require CK-4 HTHS viscosity.
  • No SAPS restriction — no DPF means no sulfated ash concern.
  • No proprietary CAT spec — API compliance is all that is required.

HIGH-MILEAGE & EXTENDED DRAIN NOTES

CAT exited the on-highway truck engine business in 2010. On high-mileage engines, extended drains are not recommended without oil analysis confirmation.

Synthetic oil and worn seals: A high-time 3406E in good condition benefits from full synthetic. On an engine with worn seals, increased oil consumption may become apparent after switching. Address seal condition before switching to full synthetic on engines already showing leaks.

AMSOIL RECOMMENDATIONS

Signature Series Max-Duty 15W-40 (DME)
CK-4 | Full Synthetic | Recommended

100% synthetic CK-4 oil. Exceeds API CH-4 — backward compatible with the 3406E. Full SAPS chemistry for maximum protection.

Heavy-Duty Diesel & Marine 15W-40 (AME)
CI-4+ | Pre-Emissions Only

CI-4+ rated. Acceptable for the 3406E (pre-emissions, no DPF).

Shop AME →

AME WARNING: AME is CI-4+ rated — for pre-emissions engines only. Do not use AME in modern DPF/SCR trucks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What oil does a CAT 3406E take?
API CH-4 or better. CK-4 15W-40 is the recommended modern choice. No proprietary spec beyond API. FA-4 not suitable — use CK-4 HTHS viscosity for this engine’s tolerances.
Is the CAT 3406E still a good engine in 2024?
Yes. Well-maintained 3406E engines regularly exceed 1.5 million miles. The key is consistent oil changes and avoiding extended drains without analysis on high-time engines. Parts and service remain widely available.
What replaced the CAT 3406E?
The C15 (and later C15 ACERT). The ACERT versions added emissions equipment that changed the oil requirements. A non-ACERT C15 (pre-2003) has the same basic oil spec as the 3406E.
Can I use synthetic oil in a high-mileage 3406E?
Yes, with caveats. Full synthetic improves cold-start protection and wear characteristics. On engines with worn seals, increased oil consumption may become apparent — synthetic doesn’t cause leaks but may flow through pre-existing gaps more readily. Address seal condition first on engines already showing leaks.
