The CAT 3406E requires API CH-4 or better. CK-4 is backward compatible and acceptable. No EGR, no DPF — low-SAPS chemistry is not required. Primary grade: 15W-40. The 3406E was produced 1993–1999 and is still in service in millions of trucks. CAT had no proprietary oil spec beyond API.
ENGINE OVERVIEW
The CAT 3406E is widely considered the most reliable diesel truck engine ever built — still powering trucks 25+ years after production ended. Pre-EGR, pre-DPF. No aftertreatment. No low-SAPS requirement. The oil spec is straightforward because the engine is straightforward.
OIL SPECIFICATION
- OEM minimum: API CH-4. This was the spec when the engine was built.
- Modern recommendation: API CK-4 15W-40. Backward compatible — exceeds CH-4, CI-4+, CJ-4.
- FA-4 not suitable — older engine tolerances require CK-4 HTHS viscosity.
- No SAPS restriction — no DPF means no sulfated ash concern.
- No proprietary CAT spec — API compliance is all that is required.
HIGH-MILEAGE & EXTENDED DRAIN NOTES
CAT exited the on-highway truck engine business in 2010. On high-mileage engines, extended drains are not recommended without oil analysis confirmation.
Synthetic oil and worn seals: A high-time 3406E in good condition benefits from full synthetic. On an engine with worn seals, increased oil consumption may become apparent after switching. Address seal condition before switching to full synthetic on engines already showing leaks.
AMSOIL RECOMMENDATIONS
100% synthetic CK-4 oil. Exceeds API CH-4 — backward compatible with the 3406E. Full SAPS chemistry for maximum protection.
CI-4+ rated. Acceptable for the 3406E (pre-emissions, no DPF).
