The Spec That Covers All Three — DFS 93K222
Every 2017+ DD13, DD15, and DD16 operates under Detroit's proprietary oil specification DFS 93K222. It supersedes API classification and is required for warranty compliance on all GHG17 Detroit engines. Pre-2017 engines use DFS 93K218.
Applies to: GHG17 DD13, DD15, DD16 (2017+). Pre-2017 engines use DFS 93K218 (CK-4).
Preferred viscosity: 5W-30 FA-4 or 10W-30 FA-4. CK-4 is acceptable but not optimal for GHG17.
What it tests beyond API: Shear stability under high-EGR load, soot dispersancy, aeration control, and cylinder liner scuffing protection (DD13 Scuffing Test).
AMSOIL product (GHG17): Signature Series Max-Duty 5W-30 (DHD) — 6× wear protection vs spec minimum.*
AMSOIL product (EPA10): DME 15W-40 or DEO 5W-40 (cold climate).

Shop DME 15W-40 →Cold-start protection to −30°C. Preferred for Canadian and northern US fleets running pre-2017 Detroit engines in winter.
Shop DEO 5W-40 →*AMSOIL third-party testing. Extended drains not to exceed 1 year. Results vary by application and duty cycle.
