CAT C13 ENGINE OIL
CK-4 SPEC, VISCOSITY & DRAIN INTERVALS FOR THE CAT C13
DIRECT ANSWER:
The CAT C13 requires API CJ-4 or CK-4 low-SAPS oil. It is equipped with EGR and DPF. Primary grade: 15W-40 CK-4. FA-4 not approved. CAT had no proprietary oil spec beyond API. AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 15W-40 (DME) meets CK-4 and is appropriate for the C13.

ENGINE OVERVIEW
The CAT C13 was the mid-range truck engine in the ACERT lineup — produced 2005–2010 and replaced by nothing when CAT exited the on-highway market. Full ACERT: EGR and DPF standard. Low-SAPS oil is not optional — it is required for DPF longevity.
OIL SPECIFICATION
- Required spec: API CJ-4 or CK-4 low-SAPS. No exceptions for DPF-equipped engines.
- Primary viscosity: 15W-40 CK-4.
- FA-4 not approved — HTHS requirements for this engine require CK-4.
- No proprietary CAT spec — API CK-4 compliance is the requirement.
- Drain intervals: 15,000–20,000 miles with CK-4 full synthetic and oil analysis.
EGR & DPF MAINTENANCE
Using correct low-SAPS oil directly impacts DPF service intervals. High-SAPS oil accelerates ash accumulation in the filter, shortening regeneration cycles and filter life. Regular EGR cooler inspection is recommended on high-mileage C13 engines.
AMSOIL RECOMMENDATION
Signature Series Max-Duty 15W-40 (DME)
CK-4 | Full Synthetic | Required for DPF
100% synthetic CK-4 formulation. Low-SAPS chemistry meets the DPF requirements of the CAT C13. Extended drain capable with oil analysis.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What oil does a CAT C13 take?
API CJ-4 or CK-4 low-SAPS. 15W-40 primary grade. FA-4 not approved. DME (CK-4 full synthetic) is the recommended choice.
Does the CAT C13 have a DPF?
Yes. The C13 is full ACERT with EGR and DPF. Low-SAPS oil is required to protect the filter. High-SAPS oil will accelerate DPF plugging and force premature regeneration cycles.
Is the CAT C13 a good engine?
Solid mid-range engine. Less storied than the 3406E or C15 but competent in the 370–520 hp range. Requires diligent EGR and DPF maintenance like all ACERT engines. With proper care, it’s a reliable workhorse.
