CUMMINS CES 20086

CUMMINS’ CURRENT ENGINE OIL SPECIFICATION FOR X15 AND ISX15 ENGINES

Cummins CES 20086 is Cummins’ current engine oil specification, required for the X15 and qualifying ISX15 engines. It requires API CK-4 as its base and adds Cummins-specific requirements for soot handling, oxidation stability, and DPF/SCR compatibility. AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 15W-40 (DME) and Heavy-Duty (ADP) both carry CES 20086 approval.

WHAT IS CES 20086?

CES stands for Cummins Engineering Standard. CES 20086 is Cummins’ current heavy-duty engine oil specification, introduced with the X15 (GHG17, 2017 model year). It supersedes CES 20081, which covered the ISX15 under EPA10 emissions rules with CI-4+ and CJ-4 era oils.

CES 20086 is built on API CK-4 but is not the same thing. Cummins applies additional testing for soot dispersancy, oxidation stability, and DPF/SCR compatibility. An oil must pass Cummins’ own test regimen and appear on their approved list — passing API CK-4 alone is not sufficient.

CES 20086 SPECIFICATION

Extended Drain Yes — 25K standard, 50K+ with analysis
Applicable Engines X15 (GHG17), ISX15 (EPA10 with 20086 oil)
Replaces CES 20081

KEY FACTS

CK-4 ≠ CES 20086

API CK-4 is the base standard. CES 20086 adds Cummins-specific performance tests. Every CES 20086 oil is CK-4, but not every CK-4 oil is CES 20086. Cummins publishes an approved product list through Fleetguard — verify your oil appears before assuming compliance.

FA-4: NOT APPROVED

FA-4 oils have lower HTHS viscosity (≥2.9 mPa·s vs ≥3.5 for CK-4/CES 20086). Cummins has not approved FA-4 for any engine requiring CES 20086. Use CK-4 exclusively.

BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY

CES 20086 approved oil is backward compatible with CES 20081 engines (ISX15 EPA10). If you run a mixed fleet of older ISX15 and newer X15 engines, a CES 20086 product can be used across both.

DRAIN INTERVALS WITH CES 20086

  • Standard highway: 25,000 miles
  • Extended with analysis: 50,000+ miles documented with qualifying oils
  • Severe service: Reduce intervals for construction, short haul, or high idle applications

AMSOIL’s oil analysis program has documented X15 drains exceeding 50,000 miles using CES 20086 approved products under controlled highway conditions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What engines require CES 20086?

Cummins X15 (GHG17, 2017+). CES 20086 oil can also be used in older ISX15 engines that originally required CES 20081 — it is backward compatible.

Is CK-4 the same as CES 20086?

No. CK-4 is the API category that CES 20086 is built on. CES 20086 adds Cummins-specific test requirements beyond what API CK-4 mandates. An oil can meet CK-4 without meeting CES 20086. Always verify against Cummins’ approved product list.

Does FA-4 meet CES 20086?

No. Cummins has not approved FA-4 for any engine requiring CES 20086. FA-4 has lower HTHS viscosity than CES 20086 requires. Use CK-4 only.

What is the drain interval on CES 20086?

25,000 miles standard for highway applications. Cummins’ extended drain guidance supports longer intervals with qualifying oil and oil analysis verification. AMSOIL’s program has documented 50,000+ mile intervals on highway X15 applications.
