CUMMINS X15 ENGINE OIL
OEM SPEC, VISCOSITY GRADES & DRAIN INTERVALS
Bottom line: The Cummins X15 requires CK-4 oil meeting Cummins CES 20086. Primary viscosity: 15W-40. Cold climate: 5W-40 below 14°F (−10°C). FA-4 is not approved for the X15. AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 15W-40 (DME) meets CES 20086 and supports extended drain intervals with oil analysis.

OEM Oil Specification — CES 20086
- API CK-4 baseline required. CES 20086 sets API CK-4 as the minimum performance threshold. FA-4 does not qualify — CK-4 only.
- Low-SAPS chemistry. Formulated for compatibility with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems. High-ash oils accelerate aftertreatment plugging.
- Extended oxidation resistance. CES 20086 requires demonstrated oxidation stability to support Cummins’ extended drain interval programs. Not all CK-4 oils pass this threshold.
- Approved viscosity grades: 5W-40, 10W-30, 15W-40. 15W-40 is the standard fleet choice above 14°F (−10°C).
- FA-4 not approved. Cummins has not released FA-4 approval for the X15. Do not use FA-4 oils regardless of API certification.
NOTE: CES 20081 is the older Cummins spec from the CI-4+ era — still referenced on some older ISX engines. CES 20086 is the current standard for the X15. If your engine manual references CES 20081, an oil meeting CES 20086 also satisfies CES 20081.
Viscosity Grade Selection
| Ambient Temperature | Recommended Grade | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Above 14°F (−10°C) | 15W-40 | Standard fleet grade |
| −4°F to 14°F (−20°C to −10°C) | 10W-30 | Cold start improvement |
| Below −4°F (−20°C) | 5W-40 | Full synthetic required |
| Year-round synthetic | 5W-40 | Best all-season protection |
Drain Intervals
OEM Standard
25,000 mi / 40,000 km
Highway operation with CES 20086 approved oil
Extended (With Oil Analysis)
50,000+ mi
Documented with AMSOIL + Blackstone analysis on qualifying highway applications
Severe Service
15,000–20,000 mi
High idle, short haul, construction, or stop-and-go operation
⚠ WARNING: Drain interval approval depends on oil meeting CES 20086. Not all CK-4 oils qualify. Verify your oil carries documented CES 20086 approval before extending intervals. An API CK-4 certification alone does not guarantee CES 20086 compliance.

Cummins X15 Oil — Frequently Asked Questions
-
What oil does the Cummins X15 take? The X15 requires CK-4 oil meeting Cummins CES 20086. Primary grade is 15W-40. AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty (DME) and Heavy-Duty 15W-40 (ADP) both carry documented CES 20086 approval.
-
Is FA-4 approved for the Cummins X15?No. Cummins has not approved FA-4 for the X15. CK-4 is required. Do not use FA-4 oils even if marketed as “backwards compatible” — they do not meet the X15’s CES 20086 requirement.
-
What is Cummins CES 20086?Cummins Engineering Standard 20086 is Cummins’ proprietary engine oil specification. It requires API CK-4 performance as a baseline and adds Cummins-specific requirements for oxidation stability, deposit control, and aftertreatment compatibility. An oil meeting CK-4 does not automatically meet CES 20086 — Cummins maintains an approved product list.
-
What’s the oil capacity of the Cummins X15?Approximately 42 US quarts (40 litres) with filter change. Verify against your specific engine configuration and Cummins service documentation, as capacity can vary by application.
-
Can I extend drain intervals on the X15?Yes — Cummins supports extended drain intervals on qualifying applications using CES 20086 approved oil. AMSOIL’s extended drain program with oil analysis support can reach 50,000+ miles on verified highway applications. Severe service, high idle, and short-haul routes require shorter intervals regardless of oil quality.
