Semi Truck Differential Oil: Viscosity, Specs & Change Intervals

Start with the axle tag—not a universal viscosity chart. The correct semi truck differential oil must match the axle manufacturer's viscosity, performance specification and service interval for the truck's actual duty cycle.

The Correct Starting Point

There Is No Single Differential Oil for Every Semi Truck

A tandem drive axle, a powered steer axle and a lift axle do not automatically use the same lubricant. Axle model, build date, ratio, seals, operating temperature and duty cycle can all change the requirement.

Shop rule: Read the axle identification tag and current OEM service manual before ordering oil. If a general chart conflicts with the axle manufacturer, the axle manufacturer's requirement wins.

Drive Axle

Hypoid gears carry high sliding loads and need extreme-pressure protection. Many Class 8 drive axles specify an SAE 75W-90, 75W-140 or 80W-140 synthetic, but the exact grade is axle-specific.

Power Divider

The inter-axle differential usually shares lubricant with the forward carrier, but housing design and fill procedure vary. Verify the correct fill points and level procedure.

Powered Steer Axle

A standard non-driven steer axle has no differential. A powered front axle does, and its fluid must be selected from that axle's own tag or manual—not assumed from the rear tandem.

Identify the Axle

Record manufacturer, model, serial number, ratio and build information from the carrier or housing tag.

Find the Specification

Check the current OEM lubricant chart for required viscosity, performance category and approval language.

Match the Duty Cycle

Line haul, local delivery, heavy haul, construction, severe heat and water exposure can change the interval.

Verify the Product

Confirm the current product data sheet covers the required application before filling the axle.

Viscosity

75W-90 vs 75W-110 vs 75W-140 vs 80W-140

The first number describes low-temperature behaviour; the second describes viscosity at operating temperature. A higher second number is thicker when hot, but thicker is not automatically better. The axle was designed around a particular viscosity range.

Do not choose by truck brand alone. Two trucks with the same badge can have different Dana, Meritor, Mack or other axle models and different lubricant requirements.

Gear Oil Specifications That May Appear in Class 8 Service Information

API GL-5 & MT-1

GL-5 is widely used for hypoid gears operating under high-speed/shock-load and low-speed/high-torque conditions. MT-1 addresses lubricants for certain non-synchronized manual transmissions and related heavy-duty drivetrains. A general category does not replace an axle-specific approval.

Dana SHAES

Dana literature may reference SHAES 234, SHAES 256 or SHAES 429A depending on the axle and service program. Confirm the exact revision and approved-product requirement in current Dana information.

Meritor Specifications

Meritor lubricant documents can reference specifications such as 0-76N or 0-80. The correct specification and viscosity depend on the axle and approved drain schedule.

Mack GO-J / GO-J+

Some heavy-duty axle applications reference Mack gear-lubricant requirements. Match both the performance requirement and the SAE viscosity listed for the component.

“Recommended for,” “meets the requirements of” and “formally approved” are not interchangeable claims. Confirm what the axle manufacturer requires and how the lubricant manufacturer describes compliance.

Semi Truck Differential Oil Change Intervals

There is no honest universal mileage. The allowable interval is the shortest applicable limit from the axle manufacturer, lubricant recommendation, duty cycle and time in service.

Drain immediately when condition demands it. Water, metal debris, burnt odour, severe oxidation or a component failure overrides the mileage schedule. Repair the cause before returning the truck to service.

For high-value equipment or an extended-drain program, use oil analysis to monitor contamination and lubricant condition. Analysis does not cancel the axle manufacturer's inspection requirements.

What to Check at Every Preventive Maintenance Service

  • Oil level at the correct fill plug and truck attitude
  • Pinion, axle-shaft and carrier seal leakage
  • Housing, cover and fill/drain plug leakage
  • Axle vent condition and hose routing
  • Milky oil, foam or evidence of water entry
  • Burnt smell, abnormal darkening or varnish
  • Metal on the magnetic plug
  • Whine, howl, rumble, overheating or abnormal vibration

A low differential does not “use” oil like an engine. If the level is low, locate the leak. Do not keep topping it off without finding the cause.

Semi Truck Differential Oil FAQ

What oil goes in a semi truck differential?

The oil specified for the exact axle model. Many Class 8 drive axles use an API GL-5 synthetic gear lubricant in grades such as 75W-90, 75W-140 or 80W-140, but there is no single correct grade for every truck. Read the axle tag and current OEM manual.

How often should semi truck differential oil be changed?

Follow the axle manufacturer's interval and the lubricant's application limits, adjusted for duty cycle and contamination. AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR may be used to the OEM synthetic interval up to 250,000 miles or three years in Class 8 line haul. AMSOIL Long Life gear lubes may be used to the OEM interval up to 500,000 miles or five years in recommended Class 8 line-haul applications.

Is 75W-140 better than 75W-90?

No grade is universally better. 75W-140 is thicker at operating temperature, while 75W-90 can reduce churning losses and improve cold flow where approved. Use the viscosity the axle was designed to run.

Can differential oil and wheel hub oil be the same?

Sometimes the same product may be approved for both components, but the sumps, viscosities, fill methods and intervals can differ. Treat the differential and wheel ends as separate service points unless the axle manufacturer's instructions say otherwise. See the semi truck hub oil page.

What does milky differential oil mean?

Milky or gray oil usually indicates water contamination. Inspect the vent, seals and operating history, then repair the entry point. Water reduces film strength and can cause rust and bearing damage.

Does a limited-slip differential need an additive?

AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR contains friction modifiers for limited-slip applications. If the axle manufacturer requires a particular additive or service procedure, follow that requirement and confirm compatibility on the current product data sheet.
