VDS-4.5 SPEC — VOLVO’S HIGH-DISPLACEMENT HEAVY HAUL ENGINE

The Volvo D16 requires VDS-4.5 approved oil. CK-4 equivalent. Primary grade: 15W-40. The D16 is Volvo’s largest displacement engine, used in heavy haul and high-torque applications. Same oil spec as the D11 and D13. AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty (DME) and Heavy-Duty (ADP) both carry VDS-4.5 approval.

D16 ENGINE OIL SPEC

  • The D16 is Volvo’s highest displacement truck engine — 16.1L, built for applications where torque output is the primary requirement.
  • Applications include Nordic heavy haul, logging, mining support, and specialty high-torque vocational work.
  • Oil spec is VDS-4.5 — same as the D11 and D13. Oil selection is identical across all three Volvo D-series engines.
  • Higher displacement and torque loads mean thermal stress on the oil is significant. A full-synthetic VDS-4.5 approved oil is the right choice.
  • FA-4 oils are NOT approved for the D16. VDS-5 does not apply. Stick to CK-4 / VDS-4.5.
  • Extended drain intervals are supported with VDS-4.5 approved synthetic oil — consult Volvo’s drain interval guidelines and use oil analysis if running extended intervals.
