About the Volvo D11

The D11 is Volvo’s mid-displacement diesel engine — lighter duty than the D13 or D16, tuned for regional haul, vocational, and lighter Class 8 applications. At 10.8L, it sits below the D13 (12.8L) in Volvo’s lineup but runs the same VDS-4.5 oil specification, meaning oil is fully interchangeable between D11 and D13 trucks.

Oil Specification

The D11 requires Volvo VDS-4.5 approved oil — a CK-4 equivalent specification. Use CK-4 15W-40 as the primary grade. There is no VDS-5 or FA-4 approval for the D11; that approval is restricted to specific 2021+ fuel-efficient D13 variants only.

  • Required spec: VDS-4.5 (CK-4 equivalent)
  • Primary grade: 15W-40
  • FA-4 / VDS-5: not approved for D11
  • Same spec as D13 — oil interchangeable between platforms
  • Standard drain interval: 50,000 km (31,000 mi) with VDS-4.5 approved oil

Frequently Asked Questions

What oil does the Volvo D11 take?

VDS-4.5 approved, CK-4 15W-40. Same spec as the D13.

Can I use VDS-5 oil in a D11?

No. VDS-5 is only for specific 2021+ fuel-efficient D13 engines. Using VDS-5 (FA-4 equivalent, lower HTHS viscosity) in a D11 is not approved and not recommended.

Is the Volvo D11 the same engine as the D13?

Different displacement — D11 is 10.8L, D13 is 12.8L. Both use VDS-4.5. The D11 is tuned for regional and lighter Class 8 applications.
