The Mercedes-Benz OM471 is a 12.8-liter inline-six heavy-duty diesel used in Mercedes-Benz truck applications including the Actros and Arocs. There is no single oil specification, viscosity or capacity that applies to every OM471. The correct lubricant depends on engine generation, vehicle configuration and the Mercedes-Benz Truck DTFR specification assigned to the application.

Do Not Choose OM471 Oil by Viscosity Alone

A 5W-30 oil is not automatically correct because the engine is an OM471. Mercedes-Benz has used different DTFR oil specifications across OM471 generations, including oils with very different high-temperature/high-shear viscosity requirements. Verify the DTFR specification before selecting the oil.

What Oil Does a Mercedes OM471 Take?

Mercedes-Benz OM471 engines can use different oil specifications depending on generation and application. Verified Mercedes-Benz Truck service-product specifications include DTFR 15C110, DTFR 15C130 and DTFR 15C140. These correspond to different viscosity and HTHS requirements and should not be treated as interchangeable.

OM471 Oil Specifications Are Generation-Specific

Mercedes-Benz Truck has progressively introduced lower-viscosity oils as the OM471 platform has evolved. The newer specification does not automatically replace the older one in every engine.

Low-SAPS heavy-duty engine-oil specification for modern emissions-equipped Mercedes-Benz commercial diesels.

Mercedes-Benz Genuine Oil references include SAE 10W-40 DTFR 15C110 and SAE 5W-30 DTFR 15C110 LT products.

This is not the same thing as API FA-4.

DTFR 15C130

Formerly MB 228.61

Lower-HTHS specification developed for improved fuel economy in selected OM471 applications.

Mercedes-Benz Genuine Oil is available as SAE 5W-30 DTFR 15C130.

Use only where the engine documentation specifically allows this specification.

DTFR 15C140

MB 228.71

Very-low-viscosity specification for newer Mercedes-Benz heavy-duty engines, including later OM471 applications.

Mercedes-Benz Genuine Oil is available as SAE 0W-20 DTFR 15C140.

Not backward-compatible. Do not use it unless explicitly required.

Mechanic's rule: Read the actual Mercedes-Benz Truck oil specification required by the engine. Matching the viscosity number alone is not enough.

Mercedes OM471 Engine Oil Capacity

The OM471 does not have one universal 42-quart capacity. Mercedes-Benz engine documentation shows different capacities depending on the oil-pan configuration.

What Trucks Use the Mercedes OM471?

The OM471 is a Mercedes-Benz global heavy-duty engine used in Mercedes-Benz truck platforms such as the Actros and Arocs. It should not be confused with the Detroit DD-series engines used in current North American Freightliner and Western Star trucks.

North American truck owner? If the truck is a Freightliner Cascadia or Western Star, identify the actual engine from the engine tag before using this OM471 guide. Current North American models use Detroit and Cummins engine families rather than a Mercedes-Benz-badged OM471.

OM471 Oil Change Interval

Do not use a universal 25,000-mile or 15,000-mile interval for every OM471. Mercedes-Benz maintenance schedules vary by truck configuration, operating profile, monthly mileage, oil specification and market.

OEM Schedule Wins

Use the maintenance interval specified for the exact vehicle and engine configuration. Mercedes-Benz publishes application-specific service schedules rather than one universal OM471 drain interval.

Extended Drain

If extending beyond the OEM schedule, use an oil-analysis program and stay within the lubricant manufacturer's published limits. Do not extend drains solely because the oil is synthetic.

No. MB 228.51 is now DTFR 15C110 and is a low-SAPS heavy-duty specification with an HTHS requirement of at least 3.5 cP. It should not be described as an API FA-4 specification.

How much oil does an OM471 hold?
