Engine Oil Spec

International LT Engine Oil

The International LT engine oil spec is API CK-4 meeting Navistar MS-1224
15W-40 primary grade, 42 qt capacity (with filter).
FA-4 is not approved for the LT Series A26 engine platform.

⚠️
FA-4 NOT APPROVED. International/Navistar specifies CK-4 only for the LT (A26) engine. Using FA-4 risks warranty coverage and engine protection.

Navistar MS-1224 Explained

MS-1224 is Navistar’s proprietary engine oil specification for International heavy-duty diesel engines, including the LT Series A26. It builds on top of API CK-4 — any oil bearing MS-1224 approval must already pass CK-4 performance limits, then clear additional Navistar-specific bench and field tests covering deposit control, wear protection, and oil stability over long drain intervals.

Not every CK-4 oil on the shelf carries MS-1224 approval. The spec isn’t interchangeable with generic CK-4 claims. Navistar publishes an approved oil list, and reputable brands submit their formulations for testing. AMSOIL’s full synthetic CK-4 products, including the Signature Series Max-Duty 15W-40, are formulated to meet MS-1224 performance criteria.

Why does it matter for the LT engine? The A26 is designed around long drain intervals — up to 25,000 miles OEM. Oils that only meet base CK-4 may not maintain adequate protection through those extended periods. MS-1224-capable oils are tested to hold up. When in doubt, verify approval on Navistar’s current approved products list or contact the oil manufacturer directly.

Viscosity Grade: LT Series

International LT operators running the A26 have two approved viscosity options depending on operating temperature. There is no approved FA-4 grade — full stop.

Primary — All Temps
15W-40
API CK-4, meets MS-1224. Standard choice for most operators. Works across the LT Series’ typical operating range. Run this year-round unless ambient regularly drops below 0°F.
Cold Weather Alt.
10W-30
CK-4 only. Use when ambient temps are consistently above −10°F / −23°C. Still must meet MS-1224. Helps with cold cranking and startup lubrication in northern climates.
Not Approved
FA-4
FA-4 is explicitly not approved for the International LT / A26. This applies to all FA-4 viscosity grades. CK-4 is the required category — there are no exceptions.

OEM Drain Intervals

The International LT is built for long highway miles. OEM intervals reflect that, but operating conditions matter. Here’s how to read the numbers:

Normal Highway
25,000 mi
Standard OEM interval. On-highway, consistent loads, minimal idling. Requires CK-4 oil meeting MS-1224.
Severe Service
15,000 mi
Urban stop-and-go, heavy idle time, extreme temperatures, or vocational use. Drop to 15K under these conditions.
Extended (Synthetic)
50,000+ mi
Possible with full synthetic CK-4 + active oil analysis program. Not a set-and-forget number — requires periodic sampling to confirm oil condition.
📊
Extended drain intervals require oil analysis, not just a calendar. Pull a sample at 25K, then every 10–15K miles after. Your results tell you when to change — not a generic number. See our OEM drain intervals by engine reference page for context across brands.

FAQ — International LT Engine Oil

The International LT engine takes API CK-4 engine oil meeting Navistar MS-1224. The primary viscosity grade is 15W-40. A 10W-30 CK-4 is an acceptable cold-weather alternative above −10°F (−23°C). FA-4 is not approved for this engine under any conditions.
MS-1224 is International/Navistar’s proprietary heavy-duty diesel engine oil specification. It requires oils to meet API CK-4 performance standards plus additional Navistar-specific criteria covering wear protection, deposit control, and long-drain stability. Only oils approved to MS-1224 are recommended for International LT and A26 engines. Not all CK-4 oils carry this approval — check the manufacturer’s specification sheet.
The International LT engine (A26 platform, 12.4L inline-6) holds 42 quarts (10.5 gallons) with filter. This is a high-capacity system — use a calibrated fill process and confirm level with the dipstick after initial startup and warm-up.
No. FA-4 is not approved for the International LT (A26) engine. International/Navistar specifies CK-4 exclusively. FA-4 was designed for next-generation low-friction engines with tighter tolerances — it is not backward-compatible with all CK-4 applications and is specifically excluded here. Using FA-4 in an LT engine may void warranty coverage and could result in inadequate protection.
The OEM drain interval for the International LT is 25,000 miles under normal highway conditions, or 15,000 miles under severe service (heavy idling, urban stop-and-go, extreme heat or cold). With a full synthetic CK-4 oil meeting MS-1224 and a consistent oil analysis program, extended drains of 50,000+ miles are achievable — but oil analysis results must support it before extending beyond OEM limits.
